The call for nominations to the CLIVAR panels and Scientific Steering Group (SSG) is now open, with appointments starting in January 2025 for panels and January 2026 for the SSG.

CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability, and Change) is a core project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). CLIVAR’s mission is to understand the dynamics, interaction, and predictability of the climate system, focusing on ocean-atmosphere interactions. In the future, CLIVAR will address the following key topics:

  • The ocean’s role in climate variability, change, and transient sensitivity;
  • The ocean’s influence on the hydrological cycle and global/regional precipitation;
  • Drivers of regional climate phenomena and their predictability;
  • Coordinated observations, analyses, and predictions of climate variability and change;
  • Detection, attribution, and quantification of climate variability and change;
  • Development and evaluation of climate simulations and predictive capabilities.

CLIVAR's objective is to facilitate observations, analysis, predictions, and projections of climate variability and change, enhancing understanding of climate dynamics and predictability for societal and environmental benefit.

CLIVAR evaluates nominations based on scientific expertise relevant to the SSG and panel terms of reference. New members for the CLIVAR SSG will be approved by the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee, while those for CLIVAR panels will be approved by the CLIVAR SSG.

Nominations that support gender and geographical balance and promote opportunities for scientists from developing countries are encouraged. Early career scientists are also welcome, providing them with opportunities to collaborate with senior scientists and advance their careers. The initial term of service is four years for SSG members and three years for panel members, with a possible two-year extension.

Nominations can be submitted online via the nomination form by 18 October 2024. Detailed information about CLIVAR panels and the SSG, including current activities and membership, can be found on their respective webpages.
