A new initiative has been launched to tackle priority issues in climate modelling science by leveraging satellite-based Essential Climate Variables (ECV). This project will utilize multiple ECVs from the European Space Agency's Climate Change Initiative (ESA/CCI) across various domains including land, atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere.
The primary aim of the initiative is to improve key aspects of climate modelling, such as model benchmarking, data assimilation, reanalysis, initialization, and the development of climate services. Additionally, it seeks to refine the understanding of crucial processes within the Earth's energy, water, and carbon cycles.
To achieve these goals, the initiative will foster collaboration between the satellite and climate modelling communities. This will involve teaming climate modellers and experts in climate model analysis with specialists in satellite-derived ECVs. The expected outcomes of this collaboration include scientific publications and technical reports that address user requirements and assess the products from the user's perspective.
This effort represents an important opportunity to enhance the precision and utility of climate models, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of global climate dynamics and improved climate prediction capabilities.
