The Working Group on Observations for Researching Climate (WGORC) is a newly established initiative dedicated to bridging the gap between climate modeling and observational data. By fostering stronger connections between observational sciences and modeling communities, WGORC aims to facilitate more effective and beneficial use of observations in climate modeling, ensuring the value of observations are maximized to enhance Earth system model predictability and utility.
WGORC will play a pivotal role in advancing model validation efforts, identifying observational gaps, and recommending best practices for data processing, sharing, and application in Earth system models. The group will work in close collaboration with other partners within and beyond the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) to support coordinated experiments and promote equitable access to data for underrepresented regions.
We invite experts in climate science with a focus on observational data and its integration into modeling efforts. Candidates should have a strong understanding of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) and their role in climate monitoring, as well as familiarity with international initiatives such as obs4MIPs and CMIP7. Experience in data policy, FAIR data principles, or data processing techniques (e.g., homogenization, bias correction, and uncertainty quantification) is highly desirable. Members will play a key role in shaping observational priorities for model development, contributing to strategic decision-making, and collaborating with global leaders in climate research.
Membership Details:
- Initial term: 4 years, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional two-year terms.
- Application deadline: March 31, 2025.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a critical scientific effort that will advance climate prediction and understanding.
