The representation of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in climate models is very varied, with different models having different strengths, different variability, and different magnitudes of responses to increasing greenhouse gases. This is a problem for climate projections and predictions, because the uncertainty in the AMOC response causes additional uncertainty in future changes of the climate. It is well known that the representation of the AMOC in models has deficiencies due to missing or poorly represented processes, but the pathway to future improvements is not clear.

To tackle this problem, CLIVAR is organizing a workshop to discuss how to improve AMOC modeling in climate models. The workshop aims to offer recommendations to the community on how to enhance these models, including specific strategies to undertake. Topics will cover how to evaluate model accuracy, the importance of model resolution, and improving the representation of key processes.

The workshop will be in-person with limited participation (about 50 people) to ensure focused discussion. Applicants should have expertise or be actively researching how the AMOC or related processes (like convection, overflows, the Gulf Stream, etc.) are affected by different model setups. This includes work with coupled climate models, ocean-only models, or high-resolution global or regional models.

Applications should be received by 14 June 2024. There will be no registration fee, however attendees will need to cover transport and accommodation themselves. The organizers will send invitations based on the relevance of research and diversity of topics. To register, please use this link.
